advice on lakes & mountains?

I%26#39;m hoping to go to Austria for 2 weeks in the summer with my partner to enjoy some lake swimming and mountain scenery. Can anyone advise me on the best area to go? Have been doing some web research but my head is buzzing and now I%26#39;m even more confused with the huge choice!?! Any small advice would be much appreciated.

I worked in St Wolfgang this summer which has an extremely beautiful lake great for swimming and some amazing mountain scenery surrounding the lake. There is a great boat service running across the lake. There is a train running up the Shatzberg mountain which has fabulous views of all the lakes in the surrounding area (20+). There is also a cable car running up the neighbouring Zwolferhorn mountain with similarly breathtaking views.

A nice idea if you are going for two weeks is to do a twin centre holiday to see more of Austria. Maybe somewhere like Zell am See would be another nice lake resort to try!

Sounds great - thanks for the tip!

Hi Scotgirl

We flew to Salzburg and then got the train (20.00 return) to Kitzbuhel and stayed for 6 nights in July.Beautiful town and surrounded by mountains with cable cars so easy hiking and you can get the train or bus to loads of places so a good base in Austria.

A couple of places not to miss are the Krimmel waterfalls(bus from Kitzbuhel)and the ice caves at Werfen(midway between Kitzbuhel %26amp; Salzburg by train).

If you stay in Salzburg you can get a bus to StWolfgang which is about an hour away an the lakeside setting is fantastic,it also has a steam cog railway up the mountain for some spectacular views.

Good luck

Hi!

If you are looking for a decent play to stay in St. Wolfgang (just 50m from the lake with own little lake access) for a good rate I can strongly recommend you http://www.haus-sonnenwinkel.com/english.htm .

I have been there in 2003 and 2004 with international guests and we paid only 25 EUR per person for the triple room with a wonderful quite balcony with great air. It is a small family business and they are very friendly.

I would also recommend to stay one week in St. Wolfgang and one week at another place like Zell am See or Kitzbhel.

Staying in St. Wolfgang, I would definitely not miss Hallstatt. Other recommended places nearby are as mentioned Schafberg and Zwlferhorn, then Gosausee (breathtaking view to the Dachstein glacier), Attersee (largest lake of the Salzkammergut area), Traunsee, and Postalm (largest mountain pasture of Austria).

Have a great time in Austria!

PS: You can get to most places by public transport. St. Wolfgang is linked to Salzburg by an hourly coach connection. On the lake there is a regular ship service connecting all the villages around the lake. To Hallstatt you take the bus to Bad Ischl, then the train and boat to Hallstatt. To the Postalm area there is a also a regular bus service a few times a day. The bus stop in St. Wolfgang (final stop of all busses) is located just 200m from the pension.

Sorry, final stop is wrong, but you cant miss it, it is at the train station for the Schafbergbahn.

Hi Scotgirl!

Just a note from a Dad in British Columbia, Canada.

My Daughter and ( my future son in law ) have a pension at Zell am See Phone: 43-654-25-30-52. Ask for Sondra.

I have heard so much about the area. Must be good ... as she is making her new life there! Says the Lake is beautifull.
