Choosing hotel

I have a problem. I can%26#39;t decide which hotel to book on our stay Nov 28-Dec 1. So I would love to hear you comments on following hotels

1. Le meridien

2. Römischer Keiser

3. Das Tyrol

4. Kaiserin Elisabeth

We would love the hotel which would be located centrally (you could walk as much as possible, restaurants, shopping near) and would be good standard (no constructions near, no questionable people hanging around). We are plannig to visit the castles near and christmas markets and few churches...

Definitely Kaiserin Elisabeth. One of my friends swears by this hotel and it%26#39;s about as central as you can get, steps from all the main sights and close to public transport, with great restaurants and the main shopping area literally on your doorstep. It is a good quality hotel - too expensive for me to stay there, so you won%26#39;t find any questionable people!

I don%26#39;t know Le Meridian at all but from what I%26#39;ve heard I think the other two hotels are pleasant but they%26#39;re not in the central district so it would be a shortish walk (15-20 mins?) to reach the centre. That%26#39;s more of a residential type area so less shops etc. though I think there are some fairly good restaurants ... but I would go with K. Elisabeth (if only I could afford it!)

Roley, back from Wien and wishing she wasn%26#39;t!

I would agree. I do not know Das Tyrol, but i found the meridien to be overpriced for what it is.

Another suggestion would be the Konig von Ungarn. It is slightly pricey but you can%26#39;t beat the location in the shadow of St. Stephens

|||

considering the location - 1,2 %26amp; 4 are located perfectly.

Le Meridien is right on the ring - 2 minutes from the opera. you%26#39;d walk about 15 minutes to St. Stephen%26#39;s cathedral (in the middle of the 1st district)

Kaiserin Elisabeth closer to st. stephen%26#39;s (4 minutes walking) therefore farther from opera (10 minutes waking).

Römischer Kaiser closer to opera (2 minutes walking) about 13 minutes to st. stephen%26#39;s.

Das Tyrol on Mariahilferstrasse ... also good location if you want to do more shopping. Mariahilferstrasse is the longest shopping street. underneath runs subway U3 which would take you right to st. stephen%26#39;s square in about 5-10 minutes.

the question here is if you would like to be in a more contemporary hotel (Meridien or Tyrol) or live like the emperor with his furniture.

%26quot;questionable people hanging around%26quot;. well that isn%26#39;t really easy to answer ... depends how much you are bothered by them. where there are lots of people there are %26quot;questionable%26quot; people. so therefore you%26#39;ll run across drunks/homeless/panhandler around the opera, karlsplatz, st. stephen%26#39;s cathedral.

can%26#39;t tell you about construction which will be going on in November. that can catch us as unaware as everyone. one day everything is perfectly quiet the next day they are tearing apart the whole street.

Thank you for your comments! :-)

I%26#39;ve been more research on the hotels and we are quite sure that Le meridien would be the best choise. %26quot;Old style%26quot; hotels are wonderful but we think that (specially my husband) we want good, soft beds, clean environment in a modern hotel. I think we get enough %26quot;emperor style%26quot; hanging around the city.

The only problem now is that we can%26#39;t figure out if the breakfast is included on the price in Le Meridien...(the website doesn%26#39;t tell that).

Deece; with questionable people I mean that the area is safe.

|||

Krissu- we also selected Meridian after MUCH research. When you factor in free internet and minibar, the rate we got was the same as Kaiserin Elizabeth. Even so I would have gone with the what-looks-to-be-amazing-Kaiserin, but alas they are booked during our dates. Geezers like us at ultra-modern Meredian will be as anachronistic as Strauss-waltzers with Bright Blue Dreadlocks.:)

Also, sign up for Meridian%26#39;s free Moments Reward program. Some postings say they upgrade your room if you are a member. (Despite signing up for every free program I can it has never happened to me, but hope springs eternal.)

I believe that if breakfast was included it would say so very specifically in your reservation. They have special promotional codes you put in for breakfast packages when you book. Being on your own for breakfast sounds like a good thing to me, based on how delectable Viennese baked goods sound. Chocolate? Breakfast? What%26#39;s not to like?

Konig Von Ungarn looks great. Unfortunately, they have NO non-smoking rooms or area (per an email I got from a manager there) which was a deal-breaker for us.

Please post a report when you return. We will be very interested to hear what you thought about the hotel.

|||

safe ... yes! that is an area where you are practically never alone. people everywhere at any time of the day!

Vienna in general is a safe place - the only thing you might want to make sure is to hold on to your wallets/purses/pockets. as in every larger city ther are pickpockets everywhere, especially where lots of people gather.

hi

you can also try DAS TRIEST

It´s a 4* design Hotel, here is the home page

www.dastriest.at/en/residence/index.html

its on Wiedner Hauptstrasse Nr 12..1 tram stop away from Opera or 5 minutes walk. So it´s a little bit less tourist and you have all facities around: supermarket, bakery, all the restaurants %26amp; bars at Schleifmühlgasse

They have standard rooms and junior suites and offer a large breakfast which is included in the prices (as far as I saw through some webpages)

Okey in the end we have now booked the Kaiserin Elisabeth for our stay in Vienna. Hope we made a good choise... We got a pretty good deal to that hotel from a local travelagent (superior room with breakfast). Only thing is that I, to my past experiences, worry that it might be freezing in an old building that time of year. I better pack my woolen socks and sweaters...
