Silent Night Chapel

Hi,

During our Christmas Market trip to Salzburg in December, we are goiing to Oberndorf to visit the Stille Nacht Chapel.

We hope to use the localbahn to get there. Is the Chapel near the station?

Which stop would be best to get off the train,Haupbahnhof or Stadt?

I would ask at the station. They have a reservation room (sliding glass door) and they speak English. They will tell you what station to get off at and print you an itinerary. They did that for me several times when I took trips from Salzburg. I loved visiting the chapel. I remember walking a bit from the station to get to the chapel but not too far.

Thanks for your help.

There are two train stations in Oberndorf, less than a mile apart. They serve the present-day downtown area of Oberndorf. The

historic district with the Silent Night Chapel is about a mile away, but still quite walkable.

If I recall correctly, the train stops in Oberndorf are about two blocks from the river and the bridge into Laufen,Germany. I think there is a walkway along the river that takes you directly opposite the chapel and then there are a set of steps that take you down to Silent Night Square. There is a small museum on the chapel and a small restaurant that%26#39;s great for some warming beverages.

On Christmas Eve at 5pm there is a commemorative service at the chapel and the Austrians dress in their beautiful red uniforms and people from all over come and sing Silent Night. They have special trains running from Salzburg to Oberndorf for this.

We found it all to be very charming and moving. Enjoy
