Vienna Daytrip during Christmas

We%26#39;re a family of four and will be spending Christmas in Vienna. We%26#39;ll be arriving on Dec. 20, staying at the Vienna Marriott, and leaving on the 26th. As this vacation was planned far in advance we have secured tickets to Die Fledermaus at Volksoper on the 22nd and Vienna Boys Choir Mass on Christmas Day. We have been considering a daytrip from Vienna but with the onset of winter would we be better served just discovering the pleasures of this lovely city?

it depends if you want to make a trip to lower Austria..see all the treads about WACHAU or you do a trip with the bus to Bratislava.

It´s a 75 minutes trip by bus

www.eurolines.at Price EURO 7,80 return per Person and you arrive at the city center/novy most.

You can get Slowakian crowns with your credit card at every ATM. The town center is newly renovated and has a nice christmas market with many food stalls. Visit the big castle.

here is the english homepage of bratislava

I believe that you will probably find enough to keep you busy in Vienna during your visit.

Plan activities carefully as the sun will be down and darkness comes by 4.:30. Always nice to do some shopping in the City Center and have a punsch( just look for large numbers of people around kiosks having a goodhot drink) Good to see all the Christmas Lights too !A visit to the wachau is must made in summer as the boats on the Danube only run April- October.

I would recommend a day trip to Melk Abbey- if you want to get out of the city and see a little more of the country.

You can buy roundtrip train tickets at the Wetbahnhof in Vienna. You have a view of austrian country side on your way.

The Abbey is magnificent with spectacular views of the Danube.

Several restaurants in the little town of Melk should be open for a coffee or more

Thank you for your responses. I suppose a daytrip to Salzburg or Budapest during winter is really not advisable. Another question I have is regarding multiple-day travel cards. Do you validate it once for the duration or does it have to validated each day? I%26#39;m a bit puzzled as it appears to be different from the London Tube or Paris Metro systems where the tickets are used to gain entrance and/or exit from the stations.

Regarding your multiday ( assume 3 day card ) for public transport) ticket- you stamp just one time at your first trip.

Validation machines are blue boxes found at the entrance to the subway ( U-bahn) or near to the door of the bus or street car.

If you use an 8 day card- you must stamp each day on the first ride.

Salzburg ( 3 hours by train) Budapest ( 2 hours by train) are both possible as a day trip if you really want to go-
