Mass at the Imperial Chapel

Hi Everyone,

I%26#39;m going to be in Vienna in late May next year and was considering going to the Sunday morning mass at the Imperial Chapel to see the Vienna Boys Choir. Apparently the program is Hofkapellmeistermesse.

My trip is on a bit of a budget... and the poor old Aussie dollar doesn%26#39;t help things!!

I sent an email to HMK@aon.at and got the following response...

%26quot;The price per ticket is 5, 14, 17, 21, 26 or 29 euros. Please note that it is not intended to see the choir during mass, because during a catholic mass everyone looks at the mass-service. Tickets at 21 euros don%26#39;t offer sight to the service of the mass, only a little view to part of the choir, tickets at 5 euros do not permit direct view either the service nor the choir.%26quot;

Any thoughts on the mass itself and which ticket price I would be best to get would be greatly appreciated!

I%26#39;ve never been to the performance of the Vienna Boys%26#39; Choir at the Hofkapelle - but I have heard that for the cheaper tickets you aren%26#39;t actually in the chapel, but in an adjacent room where you watch the service via a video link!!! Um, or you could sit outside in the Schweizerhof and listen to it for free! (which I have done :) So if you are mad keen to go, I think it would be worth stumping up for the dearest tickets. They are, after all, still a lot cheaper than the Spanish Riding School where I spend my Sunday mornings (but the Lipizzaner are cuter!)

If I%26#39;m going to mass, I prefer the Augustinerkirche, also adjacent to the Hofburg, with a wonderful full choir. But then I like my Saengerknaeben in small doses - a walk-on part in Zauberfloete is sufficient!

Seating on the ground floor is oriented towards the Priest and the Altar.

There are boxes on either side on the 2nd and 3rd levels. The boxes face each other with a view across.

If you sit in the 1st or 2nd row of these boxes, your view will cover the Choir, Priest saying mass and the ground floor seating.

If you are Catholic, Communion will be distributed to you.

This is a lovely service and the music is wonderful.
