Off the beaten path!

Can you recommend any day trips that are %26#39;off the beaten path%26#39; for Vienna? Thanks!

This depends somewhat on the time of year for %26quot; Off the Beaten Path %26quot;

A visit to the Abbey at Melk is not really off the beaten path but a good day trip year round,

From April to October, a visit to Melk can be combined with a boat trip down the Danube to the town of Krems- a really nice trip.

In winter, for snow lovers- a train trip to Semmering is a fun day. A beautiful train ride to the mountains and if you wish - fun in the snow or a ride up the mountain by ski lift.

A ride to Baden - about 45 minutes by train or tram. Baden is a small Spa town with Casino too! Beautiful gardens.

Some beautiful old buildings.

Like Roman ruins- go to Carnuntum- less than one hour from Vienna- a garrison town to guard the frontier of the Roman Empire. A good museum too!

Of course I must mention the Wachau ( or Hoftraveler will remind me)

This is a beautiful wine area along the Danube

near The town of Krems. You see this area on the boat trip down the Danube mentioned above.

But these towns of Krems, Loiben, Durnstein, Weissenkirchen, Spitz are worth a visit to themselves, especially in summer.

The towns , many more than 1000 years old with their many wineries and eating places make a perfect day!

As the most %26quot;Off the beaten paths%26quot; I vote for Carnuntum - important : an excellent wine-area.

Or what about Loisium in Langenlois : a visitor centre made out around the theme %26quot;wine%26quot;. A %26quot;Cube%26quot; made from Aluminium, built in the lovely countryside, with a network of old cellars in the basement. An exciting architectural idea. There is also a spa, for few (or more) pempering hours . . .
