Vienna Daytrip to Salzburg - are we mad?

Hi, Staying in Vienna in may for four days. We are going budapest - vienna - prague. I was hoping to go to salzburg for a day in order to do a %26quot;sound of music%26quot; tour, very kitsch i know, but i love it!! Anyway we would need to be in Salzburg for about 2pm on the day we would go. FIrstly would it be ridiculous to take it on and secondly what would be the best way to travel (train/rent a car). It has to be a day trip.

you have several trains departing from Wien Westbahnhof

to Salzburg Hauptbahnhof. The trip is between 2h41-3h15 per leg. You can take early trains

speaking as Viennese I can say I hate this stupid film and musical..all hollywood nonsense, it has nothing to do with the real story of the trap family. Don´t forget that in the movie they escape to the NORTH from the bad Nazi. but Italy is South and Germany is North of Salzburg.

|||

I understand also that the real Trapp family escaped by comfortable train.

Don%26#39;t let the truth get in the way of a good story!!

|||

I highly recommend the train which will be fast and direct.

In Salzburg the rail station is about a mile from the old town so check where your tour goes from. You can walk to the old town or take a bus Number 1 or 2 I think about 2 euros each.

If you like good coffee don%26#39;t buy one on the train.

On my first visit to Salzburg I travelled in from the airport by bus taking little peeps at my map to see where we were. A lady of 60 or so noticed and gave me directions, helping me on to the right bus. It made me feel like an escaping person and I wondered what her experiences of the 1940s had been. Anyway I was grateful for her help.

You are not mad- merely a fan and if you are close to Salzburg make the trip!

I agree that the train is the best way to go.

The trip back from Salzburg by car, when you are tired is not much fun.

Trains leave at least every hour from the Westbahnhof.

example - leave Vienna 7AM in Salzburg at 9:48

No need to reserve seats - 2nd class is OK

Much to see in the old city.

Yes the tour is %26quot; Kitsch%26quot; but at least you see it!

Perhaps a few in Vienna, may not like the musical, but it is now part of the schedule at the Volksoper, plays regularly to full audiences and has received good reviews.

In fact , the largest number of children ever to appear for auditions prior to casting at the Volksoper,was for The Sound of Music.

I would just add to Vertical%26#39;s post to say that if the Sound of Music is on at the Volksoper when you are in Wien (check the schedules on www.volksoper.at), it is definitely worth seeing. All in German of course, but lots of fun and the children are tremendously good. There are a couple of crucial plot changes in the musical which IMO made it much better than the film :) I went with a die-hard SOM fan and she really enjoyed it.

And Salzburg is definitely worth a visit on any pretext! The trains are great and will get you there in good time and the city is small enough that even in one day you will be able to see a good deal of it. If you can get there early in the morning I recommend a visit to the Fortress before you take the tour in the afternoon - it%26#39;s really fascinating and the views are spectacular.

I would say it%26#39;s not ridiculous to take on this visit to Salzburg because the city is beautiful in itself even without the movie. We were here March of this year but we took the trip from Munich although we also stayed in Vienna because it%26#39;s nearer. One thing I can say, if you want to ask info on the whereabouts of the film%26#39;s setting, you would be disappointed since this film is quite unknown in this place although it was shot here. You would have to know the details of a tour beforehand or the exact place where you want to go so research the locations. We got a private cab with a driver to get us there and although he knows the area, he doesn%26#39;t know the movie and the locations seen in the film.

Included in the information package sent out on request by the Salzburg Tourist Office is a fancy leaflet giving full details of the SOM filming locations.
