budapest or prague

hi all- we are spending a week in vienna for 1st week of december - we have booked an apartment and are hoping it will be ok. We are also planning to do a trip to either prague or budapest for a day stay overnight and back to vienna. IS this practical/possible and if so which one would you recommend? Am really looking forward to it -especially after reading all posts here - opera, shopping, christmas markets, cosy taverns. What about nice bars or nightlife? Any recmendations? Is fish popular in restaurants or is it mostly meat(pork)? All thoughts welcome!

Prague and Budapest are equal in terms of excitement and cultural attractiveness. But Budapest is closer to Vienna (travel time by train approx. 2h30min to 2h50min), which can be a decisive advantage. Budapest is also reachable by boat being an interesting alternative to rail or bus/car.

Due to lack on great waters, fish is not a typical dish being served in Vienna. Of course we get fish from the lakes and rivers, but Viennese focus more on meat. A Wiener Schnitzel can be made of beef, pork, chicken and turkey.

thanks mikey - budapest it is then!!!

and what about nightlife? any ideas?

trying to decide between not good seats for carmen and good seats for die flederman.....

Living in Vienna doesn%26#39;t imply being interested in music or theatre. I rarely go to such events.

What kind of entertainment do you prefer?

|||

With only 20 minutes difference in the travel time......I%26#39;d say Prague not Budapest, though one night would only give you a taster. We love Prague: to us it has a lot more charm than Budapest which has a much more big-city feel. Only been in the summer but friends from here have visited Prague in December and said it was magical.

Not just pork (though mainly):try the duck!

Trains to Prague need at least 4h30min, which is much more than to Budapest.

hi mikey - i seem to b having problems typing things up today so hope this comes out. thanks for the response - i was hoping for some insider info on some nice atmospheric bars in vienna and possibly some live music - or bars with nice laid back soul/jazz/indy/blues whatever. more atmospheric versus super cool or stuffy...again though am open to suggestions..

@ sunnyvale

www.ig-jazz.at

sadly this page doesn’t exist in english but most of the jazz %26amp; blues locations are listed there when you click on “Die Clubs“. there are the complete adresses %26amp; also websites (if available). it’s worth it to try the websites because some are at least partly translated.

you’ll probably be staying somewhere close to the 1st district. in or very close to the district are the locations:

“Jazzland”, open every day except Sunday – live music daily

“Miles Smiles”, open daily – regular live concerts

“Tunnel”, open daily – live music daily - excellent food!

“Porgy %26amp; Bess” www.porgy.or.at open daily - great fun!!

“Birdland” www.birdland.at is the newest addition of jazz clubs but that one would fall under the “classy” categorie.

thanks for that deece - what about live music of the blues/rock variety??!!!

or even just some nice laid back bars! am looking forward to sampling all vienna has to offer. what do you reckon is most popular viennese alcoholic drink?? beer? is there an austrian beer? autrain wines yes, and austrian spirits?!

(not ina very cultural vein today!!)

Alcoholic Drinks! a fun question to answer! Most all places will have a good selection of all types!

Local beers are very good and numerous breweries supply large amounts -some names Ottakring, Gosser, Zwettl

to order ask for a krugel - 1/2 liter - large

Seidl - 1/3 liter - medium

Pfiff - 1/8 liter- small

The above terms are unique to Vienna- and are part of the local dialect

probably most popular are the wines-most all from Austria. You will probably see most people drinking wine with their evening meal.

I believe whites better than red - but a personal preference.

Gruner Veltliner and Reisling are most favored whites. zweigelt -red

No need to order a bottle- most wines can be ordered by the glass either a quater or eighth liter.

Many drink schnapps- high alcohol content shot size- most often made from fruit. Often a digestive or after dining drink

For nightlife- try the area known as %26quot; The Bermuda Triangle%26quot; in the city center not far from Swendenplatz.

The name implys some have gotten lost in this area - all types of bars, cafes, music etc. shop for what you like - a fun place for the young.

Also popular - The Passage- on the Ring drink and dance

For more mature upscale place - try Eden Bar in the First District

Porgy and Bess always good music.

Hope this helps a little more!
