Tragedy! By the time the Traviata tickets became available online this morning, all that were left were a few 10 euro ones! I%26#39;m in the Balkon Proszeniumslogen Rechts, row 2. Not much chance of seeing I fancy but a) I%26#39;ll hear it and b) there%26#39;s always the possibility the people in row 1 might fail to show and I%26#39;ll see a bit better.
I%26#39;m having a hunt around for anything else on in Vienna that night and I%26#39;m tempted by an organ concert at the Augustinerkirche. Is that easy to get to?

Oh yes, dead easy - entrance on the Josefsplatz, just behind the Stallburg - you know, where Harry Lime got run over (not). Easiest for you prolly to catch the no. 3A bus and hop off in the Plankengasse, walk up by the Evangelical church and you%26#39;re more or less there. Coming from the other direction, it%26#39;s past the Albertina heading towards the Hofburg. Albertinaplatz can be tricky in icy conditions though so might be better sticking to ye trusty bus, at least on your way there.
I like Augustinerkirche best of all the Wien churches; the concerts I%26#39;ve heard there have been better even than Stephansdom. But you don%26#39;t fancy the Wiener Symphoniker playing Mozart %26amp; Dvorak at the Musikverein that night? Info and tix to be obtained here http://www.jeunesse.at
Have you considered going the dread ticket agency route for La Traviata? A couple I have used report having sold out of La Traviata but there%26#39;s http://www.viennaticket.com/ which I%26#39;ve used in the past and they seem to specialize in grovelling about and finding stray tix to things. It might be worth a crack - though the mark-up will doubtless be fearsome.
Hmm, this makes me fret I won%26#39;t get me Figaro ticket for 16/12 at this rate!

I wonder why they go so fast? I mean there are some earlier dates that are much less popular! You can buy standing tickets before the performance though, that%26#39;s what I%26#39;m going to do for La Traviata. I%26#39;ll try to get Lohengrin premiere (it%26#39;s over 5 hours so I don%26#39;t want to stand it) seats too but I think they have been all pre-ordered too...
|||
For hard-to-get tickets, don%26#39;t forget your hotel concierge. Some have their own supplier networks (such as hereditary subscribers who don%26#39;t much like music, as well as those with conflicting plans) and don%26#39;t go through the agencies, although the markup can be fierce with them as well.

Well, I quite fancy the Messaien and the tocatta and fugue at the Augustinerkirche but you said the dreaded word - ICY. That lets me out..... (wimp)

ps, Roley, can I borrow you on the Munich forum, please?

No, really, Augustinerkirche isn%26#39;t hard to get to if you don%26#39;t come down the Augustinerstrasse (!) You could even Ubahn to Stephansplatz, walk up the Graben, walk up the Braunerstrasse and you%26#39;re there. And Josefsplatz is big knobbly cobbles, excellent for walking on in the worst weather. There%26#39;s just something about the Albertinaplatz being all open and exposed and the wind seems to whistle down from the Ring and for some reason it was quite icy-fied. But not English-bad icy-fied (black frozen slush) I just mean the pavements weren%26#39;t pristine and bone-dry - and it was most definitely gritted (but don%26#39;t do as I do and attempt to march across the park in the middle doh).
If you do go, wrap up warm! I swear, Augustinerkirche is the coldest church in all Wien - I got bronchitis there a couple of Christmasses back (but hey, I enjoyed the concert and it was my own silly fault for not wearing a hat and gloves - I%26#39;ve learned my lesson now!)

I think I%26#39;m going with the standing room. Hotel concierges charge way too much, I%26#39;m a budget traveller.
Does anyone know how long I have to wait to get a standing-room ticket?

I would not worry about ice on the walkways- a rare occurance. The dienst are usually out with small stones to cover any ice that appears.
For Augustiner-
Take 3A to Habsburgergasse stop then just a short walk or 2A to Michaelerplatz.
However these bus lines often do not run during concert days ( example Sunday) or time( later in the evening )
Alternative is U-3 to Herrengasse stop - then short walk up Herrengasse to the Platz.
This is a good way in the cold times- stop at one of the cafes for a warm drink.

Thanks for all the help. The cafes sound good!
Roley! If memory serves, you%26#39;re back from Salzburg? Please nip across to Munich forum and see what you made me do!!!!!
