Weather: 22nov - 28nov

We will be on our honeymoon and considering Hotel Grauer. Any comments on the hotel?

How is the weather at the end of November? We are not skiers and want to do sightseeing if the weather is not too cold or wet. Is the timing good for visiting Innsbruck?

Thanks,

Rovermg

For a hotel in Innsbruck, we would recommend the Gasthof-Hotel Weisses Kreuz. My review of our stay there is at: tripadvisor.com/ShowUserReviews-g190445-d235…

The hotel website is: http://www.weisseskreuz.at/en/index.htm The Christmas Market will be open, right outside your front door and nearly all the major attractions are just a short walk. Definitely get the Innsbruck Card. http://www.innsbruck-tourism.at/

Weather wise, we have skied in a snow storm up on the mountains while down in town it was cloudy but dry.

Any suggestions on the weather? Has the winter season started during this time?

No way to predict weather other than to say generally winter weather is not usual for November especially in the valleys.

As you go inctrease altitude more snow is possible.

most ski areas near Innsbruck would not normally be open in November ( perhaps in middle of December openings are more common. Exception would be glacier areas.

As Innsbruck is in the valley , you may have relatively cool temperatures and see snow on the mountain tops around the city.

This makes for a nice atmosphere for the non skier tourist

Vienna,

Thanks for the comment. Since we plan to stay at Innsbruck for 5 nights, we would like to visit Vienna as well.

How easy is it to get to Vienna?

Thanks!

Will the christmas markets start as early as 24th November.

Thanks

According the the web site, the christmas market begins 18NOV and ends 28DEC.

The trip Innsbruck to Vienna is a very easy one by train

Look to Austrian Rail Website -

www.oebb.at ( also in english ) for trains, times etc.

Trains are comfortable, most with dining cars.

Vienna Christmas markets begin to open on November 12th at the Rathaus ( City Hall)

Others follow quickly

Spittelberg - Nov. 17

Belvedere - Nov. 18

Schonbrunn - Nov. 19

Others open in the same time frame. All are open by end of November.

Vertical,

thanks for the Web site. Can I visit Vienna from Innsbruck on a day trip? Once I arrive via train to Vienna, is it easy to walk the city to explore?

Thanks!

For rovermg99:

Your trip Innsbruck - Vienna by train takes 5 hours plus.

With so much to see in Vienna I would not recommend a one day trip.

But you must decide your own priorities. It can be done in one day just to see a few things.

No need to make reservations for your train ride. Just go to the train station and purchase your ticket - 2nd class is OK.

Many trains day and night to choose- some will require a train change in Salzburg- but this is easy to do! Just be ready at the door to get off as train comes to the station. Tourists are surprised by the little time trains spend in the station

You arrive by train at the Westbahnhof. Best way to the City Center and location of most tourist sites is by Subway ( U- Bahn) The lines U-3 and U-6 are found below the train station.

Take U-3 in the direction Simmering 5 stops to City Center - Stephensdom- the very center ofthe city - within easy walking distance of many places to see.

Look on the Trip Advisor site for Vienna to offer good touring choices.

Your transport ticket in Vienna will cost 1.50 euro per ride or 5 euros for a day.

It is good on any bus, streecar or subway.

Day trips to Garmisch-Partenkirchen or Salzburg would be feasible. Travel time to Garmisch-Partenkirchen is 1h 24m and the one-way 2nd class fare is 11.90 €. Time to Salzburg is 1h 59m and the one-way 2nd class fare is 33.60 €. Use the DB website to find schedules. http://reiseauskunft.bahn.de/bin/query.exe/en

The two towns are obviously very different. Garmish is smaller but similar to Innsbruck while Salzburg is much smaller and more like Vienna.
