Planning on visiting Lake Hallstatt from Venice in May. Any suggestion on places to stay and how best to get there?

I recommend staying overnight in Hallstatt as it is very busy with tourists during the day.
We visited by train and there is a boat the last 2 miles across the lake, a good direction to approach from. Boats run to meet all trains until about 530 pm.
Or you could stay Bad Ischl which is a large town nearby and visit for the day.

You might consider breaking up the journey as the fastest way from Venezia S. Lucia station to Hallstatt Markt Schiffstation [ship station] is 8h 44m departing Venice at 06:47 or 10h 28m departing at 20:44 on two overnight trains. We stayed at Gasthouse Simony and enjoyed it very much. It is a 500 year old hotel with charm. There are many other nice places to stay as well. Some pictures of Hallstatt from people who contribute to this site can be seen at the following link.

We rented a car during our Germany-Austria visit so Hallstatt was no problem getting there. Public transportation is also good.
Enjoy your trip. Hallstatt is beautiful.
