What things must we do / see in Salzburg?

We are off for a 4 night / 5 day break to Salzburg this Saturday. Could anyone advise what City treats we mustn%26#39;t miss on our break. My mother has recommended a trip to Wolfgangsee. Any other MUST DO ideas? (We will not be hiring a car but are happy to do excursions).

Also any recommendations for good wholesame reasonably priced restaurants (casual only pls)?

Thanks for any help.

You lucky, lucky things!!

Wolfgangsee without a car might be a treck on public transport but perhaps others can advise on that.

With the markets on in the Old City you will have so much to do you may decide to postpone excursions for another time.

Here are my very personal recommendations:

If you like Mozart his birthplace and dwelling house are worth seeing. If you want to see a few of the %26quot;sights%26quot; get a Salzburg card from the information office in Mozartplatz and you get one entrance free to loads of sights, and free public transport in the city. Do not miss a trip up to the fortress. Many people just enjoy the veiws over the city but if the weather is clear the views of the mountains from the south side of the fortress are stunning. There is also a wonderful restaurant up there. The Salzburg card gives entrance to the Fortress (including, I think, the fenicular railway). The Fortress rooms are interesting too and SO ancient.

For a traditional coffee shop we love Tomaselli in Alter Markt. There are two floors and it is popular with locals.

Take advantage of the stands selling Gluhwein. They serve it in British Transport Cafe sized mugs!!

Hellbrun castle, a short busride out of the city is spectacular in the snow and there is a Christmas market there too.

A good casual restaurant is Zum Mohren in Judengasse. You go downstairs below ground where the ancient city walls are visible in the restaurant. You can get such a variety of reasonably priced food here including curry, pizza, traditional Austrian and many other dishes. The staff are SO friendly.

Hope some of this is helpful. Would you like me to come and carry your bags? :-)

Have a great time.

Mirabel gardens and Hellbrun are both very good sights to visit.

Excellent!! A must do excursion must be the sound of music tour. I know it sounds naff but I have to admit to having enjoyed it immensely. The tour we took took us all over the guide spoke excellent english. We even ended up at the eagles lair in Bavaria! Brilliant. Another good day out were the salt mines. we used public transport, buses and trains, to get about. It was very easy. There is a pub which serves excellent cheap food its called the red fox and is in the old town. A trip up to the concert hall at the top of the hill overlooking the town gives an excellent view. The castle is also a must.

The Xmas markets are brilliant and if you are not feeling festive now you most certainly will do after visiting these! I was there the same time last year and will most certainly go back - its a beautiful place. Good choice.
