Can anyone suggest a cheap, central pension that would allow us to stay for only 3 or 4 nights and not a whole week?

Try the Ischgl web site and punch in the dates, to see availability. WWW.Ischgl.com or www.tiscover.at. We are staying in Ischgl for 3 nights and it is not easy to book, especially over peak periods. Keep persevering!

Teajay - Im seriously considering Ischgl. Mostly because snow is guaranteed and there seems to be a few empty rooms. But I would prefer a smaller resort- Ive been to St Johann a few times and really enjoyed it. I would go again but they seem to be booked up solid. Any ideas on smaller, less-touristy resorts? As long as there are a few pubs and enough runs to keep us intermediate snowboarders happy for 3 days? Im open to suggestions.

Depending where you are crossing the border into Austria i.e Bregenz there is the Montofon www.montofon.at with several little villages such as Schruns, St.Gallenkirch, Gaschurn, vandans on the Hochalpenstrasse(same valley as Ischgl, but only accessible from the other end!!!)No english tour operators there - mainly german %26amp; dutch. Also further down the Tirol is Obergurgl(Oetz valley) which is very high, snow sure and small with several bars. www.obergurgl.at only problem is the hour drive down the valley to get there, but well worth it in my opinion.
Alternatively, if you%26#39;re crossing at Munich try the small villages of Ellmau,Ssheffau or Going on the Skiwelt circuit near Soll (which is the main town - touristy %26amp; busy)
although this is low level skiing. Many low level resorts have opened already due to good snow falls, but that is not always garenteed to hang around, although they have plenty of snow making facilities!!
Hope this helps a little. Check out www.bergfex.com and go to austria, then schneewertre and it will give you all the resorts and how many lifs are open, snow depth, etc
