Nice restaurants and bars in Vienna

I am staying in Vienna over New Year and would like some recommendations on good bars and restaurants.

|||

One of the Vienna newspapers just published the 2006 Guide for favorite places.

The following

Best Restaurants

1. Meinl am Graben

2. Steierereck im Stadtpark

3. Korso ( Bristol Hotel)

4. Palais Coburg

5. Eckel

Note. these are not cheap places. many good restaurants at less prices can be found everywhere.

Best Szene

1. Ra´mien

2. Loos Bar

3. Eden BarBar

4. Wein and Co. Bar

5. Naschmarkt deli

The Passage is also high rated %26quot; in Spot%26quot;

Many go to an area known here famously as the %26quot; Bermuda Triangle %26quot;( in First District- not far from Stephensdom)

Many places for night life too numerous to mention- just walk along - find what you like.

|||

Is there a good area for nightlife in Vienna? What about nightclubs or late bars?

|||

As psted previously- try the Bermuda Triangle- probably most every type of place you can think of!

It will go all night!

The %26quot;Passage %26quot; on the Ring near to the Hofburg is very popular .

|||

Meinl am graben is foremost a fancy overpriced grocery store. Steiereck is very, very expensive but they have a %26quot;milkbar%26quot; in the back that serves all sort of dairy products..wonderful cheeses..at a reasonalble price. Eckel is great, but off the beaten path, in an area called Sievering. Try Figlmueller downtown , or Ofenloch in Tuchlauben - easy to find and good, Austrian food.

|||

Regarding Meinl comment by prior poster- They obviously do not know Meinl.

The restaurant is on the first floor ( second floor to non - europeans) and has a perfect view of the Graben, a pedestrian shopping zone. Very nice atmosphere. Most dine in the evening after store has closed. Access can by made by private elevator on the Naglergasse side of the building.

The restaurant is acknowledged in all Restaurant Guides to have some of the best food available anywhere.

Meinl also has a wine bar frequnted by many %26quot; Locals%26quot;in the lower level of the store, again access from Naglergasse side doorway.

As usually, I%26#39;m going to recommend my favourite : the bar %26quot;planter%26#39;s%26quot; is definitely one of the nicest ones in Vienna (near to Schottentor, Zelinkagasse) - also with a good restaurant %26quot;Livingstone%26quot; (open 365 days a year). Or what about %26quot;first floor%26quot; (near Schwedenplatz, 1st distr.). I like the %26quot;Barfly%26quot; in the Eszterhazy-gasse (6th district - why not one a bit off the beaten paths?! . . .)

|||

I know Livingstone- good place.

Do not know Barfly- must try it!

|||

Figlmueller is the biggest tourist trap I have ever seen - avoid at all cost. There are other places where you can have a very good Wiener Schnizel without the rudeness, waiting in a long line and being stuffed together at the table with people you have never met. Oh, and they do not carry beer either - only their own wine.

The restaurant I keep coming back to is Plachuta. Admittedly, also quite a few tourists, but excellent tafelspitz and very attentive service.

|||

Plachutta is alway top on my list.

if you are around the 08th district try out

más coctel bar

Laudongasse 36

1080 Wien

Thanks for all of the tips. I might get around to any sightseeing if I try out all of those bars!
