We will be attending the Staatsoper performance of The Marriage of Figaro in December. What is appropriate dress? Thanks in advance.

Unfortunatey, you will see everything from jeans to smoking ( tuxedos).
However most will be in suits and ties for men
women- tailored better dress or pants suit.
Just my opinion, but the performers and the tradition of the House deserve an audience that makes a small effort to look nice.
I am certain that you will enjoy the evening.Just asking the question means that you will be dressed appropiately.

One big difference from the US is that you are required to check your coat at the opera, so allow extra time for this.
