Salzburg end of December

Will be in Austria at the end of a trip with my 21, 19, and 16 year old. Probably two days in Austria as we head toward Zurich to finish our trip. Two questions: 1. Any thoughts as to places to stay in or around (and this can be w/in 3 hours of Salzburg). I heard the train trip to Zurich is quite scenic. 2. Anything extra special in Western Austria to take in on the way? Thanks

For different reasons, we enjoy both Munich and Innsbruck which are along the way from Salzburg to Zurich.

There will more interesting sights/shops in Munich for the teenagers yet the train from Innsbruck to Zurich is more scenic than from Munich.

I agree with Doug - city-wise Munich is much more interesting than Innsbruck while the rail route over the Arlberg pass and along the Walensee lake from Innsbruck to Zürich is far more scenic than the one from Munich. I%26#39;m afraid you have to decide...

I always recommend the Hotel Doktorwirt to stay in Salzburg (Ruhetag = Monday) see my review and photos on this site.
