My family and I will be in Salzburg the first week of Aug. Has anyone been there at that time? If you stayed in a hotel without A/C did you regret not going to a hotel with A/C? It%26#39;s hard to find one with A/C in the city for around $200-250 for 2 rooms.
I%26#39;ve also thought about staying in the outskirts of the city or in a small town, but won%26#39;t have a car so can anyone recommend somewhere outside Salzburg with Austrian charm (around $200 or so for 2 rooms) where it would be easy to get into the city?

It can get pretty hot in Salzburg at that time. I was there at the end of July this year and the temperature one day was 40 degrees celcius (which I think is the hottest I have ever been in my life!) It cools down quite a bit late at night (but men were still fainting in the opera after 9pm so it does take a while to get noticeably cooler!)
The heat isn%26#39;t too bad - I come from a coastal area and have felt worse on a really steamy humid day at ten degrees less than that. But if you%26#39;re not used to doing without a/c in the hot weather, it might be worth splashing out for it. Very few Salzburg hotels have a/c though, so you will pay a premium for it.
One of our regulars mentioned a hotel on the outskirts of town that had a pool and the whole nine yards - you could try looking thru the Salzburg forum for that recommendation. Maybe that would be the way to go rather than frying in the central city! The buses in Salzburg are pretty good (though the late night service leaves a bit to be desired).

Thanks Rol - I%26#39;ll see if I can find it. In your experience, do the hotels outside of Salzburg have A/C? Or do they tend to be cooler anyway since they are maybe more in the mountains?

The Hotel Doktorwirt in Aigen is four star but family run and extremely friendly. It has in and outdoor pools. The bus stop is a two minute walk away and the trip into town takes between 12 and 15 minutes. We never waited longer than ten minutes for a bus.
