Hotel Choice - would like advise

We are looking a 3 hotels based on what we are looking to spend per night. They are the Hotel Kaerntnerhof, Hotel Austria, and Zu Wiener Staatsoper. All 3 look good and have favorable reviews. Just looking for some extra input. Also if there is another hotel in this price range that is centrally located , please feel free to suggest it. We will be traveling in the off-season. Probably March.

I%26#39;m not familiar with the 3 hotels you listed, so I do not know what price range they fall into, but whenever I go to Vienna, I stay at the Pensione Pertschy, Habsburgergasse 5, 1010 Wien. tel. 011-43-1-534-49-0 email: pertschy@pertschy.com

Pertschy is located 1/2 block off the central pedestrian plaza, and 1/2 block away from the palace downtown. It is truly a delight to stay here. The rooms are comfortable (ask for one that faces the inside courtyard) and their breakfast is, hands down, the best in town.

Now granted, the last time I was there was 2001 (unfortunately during 9/11) so it%26#39;s been 4 years. But back then, a double was $95. With the deflation of the dollar and normal price increases, the hotel now costs around $145 for a double.

I hope this was somewhat helpful.

Try the konig von ungarn. Great location just behind St. Stephans. Beautiful small hotel.

Thank you both. You are the secon person to suggest Pensione Pertschy. Looks nice and I have added to my list. I now have 4 to choose from.......We usually don%26#39;t like rooms that face into the courtyard. I realize that they are probably quieter but prefer rooms that face out the front. ....Have you seen any of those rooms ? Does the pension have a lobby bar ?

The Konig Von Ungarn is a definite upgrade from the other hotels. Looks very classy. However, the price $245 is more than we want to spend.

Thank you for your suggestion.

Patrobert,

Look at the Neuer Markt at Seilergasse 9 Wien 1010. (near St. Stephan%26#39;s Cathedral %26amp; the Capuchin Church-both have concerts).

They are very convenient, central, have a lift, (lots of Coca-cola), good breakfast, laundry service, clean %26amp; very friendly.

I like Pertschy best - they also have another hotel on the Kartnerstrasse, the Aviano, and that might be another option for you - it%26#39;s listed on the pertschy.com site. I%26#39;ve always enjoyed staying in their pensions -the service is particularly good and the Pertschy location is superb - the closest hotel to the Hofburg (and, ahem, more importantly the Spanish Riding School!) It doesn%26#39;t have a bar but it does have a free internet terminal in the hall! And hotel bars are hardly necessaryin Wien with so many nice cafes to hand.

There are rooms looking into the Braunerstrasse but these can be noisy in the summer months as there are restaurants along the stret with outside tables. The better rooms look into the courtyard. They are very nice and it%26#39;s quite a pretty courtyard - not just an airshaft! It%26#39;s a traditional building design, being an original 17th century palace.

I%26#39;ve staid at Kaernterhof and i think it is dear for what you get- a pretty basic 3* hotel. Austria looks nicer but both of these are a little out of the way (not hugely far but just a bit of a bore when you are trekking round the main sites and then have to march home). The Wiener Staatsoper looks nice from the site but I%26#39;ve not staid there.

From what you say I%26#39;d expect you%26#39;d prefer the 4* places like Kaiserin Elisabeth, Von Ungarn, maybe Aviano, rather than the cheaper places with fewer facilities. But I do think you can%26#39;t go wrong with Pertschy - I am tired of hotels with busted this and broken that - I never have any problems like that at the Pertschy hotels, and I must have staid there about 8 times.

Our final choice is Pension Pertschy. They offered us a great deal for March 2006. Thanks all for the advice and input. It was very helpful as this hotel wasn%26#39;t on our original list. In the end , it looked like the best choice.

Can%26#39;t wait until our trip !!!!!

Good for you Patrobert. My hubby and I stayed at the Perchsky in September. It is a little worn but our standard double had an oriental rug, street view, sitting area with sofa, an extra twin bed, 2 armoirs, cute vanity and mirror, table with chairs, crystal chandelier and high decorative plaster ceilings... Except for the smallish bathroom which modern, cold and stark I was staying in a palace.

Anyway you will love it ....just do not use your own blow dryer. Don%26#39;t ask....just use theirs :)
