Salzburg Accommodations for December Trip

My wife, sister and her husband and I will be traveling to Germany for the christmas markets in December and would like to include Salzburg for several days. I am looking for recommendations and advice for accommodations. Charm and location are important. Three or four star ratings. We will be driving, so access and parking are a consideration. As an aside: has anyone been to Salzburg for the Christmas markets?

If you stay in a hotel in the old town on the Hohensalzburg fortress side of the river you should have an enjoyable visit. Two 4* hotels that meet this criteria in which we%26#39;ve stayed are Hotel Elefant and Hotel Blaue Gans. Make sure to try the local speciality dessert Nackerl. I%26#39;ve never attended the Salzburg Christmas Market but can heartily recommend the Stuttgart (where we live) Christmas Market: it is the largest in Europe and one of the prettiest and also oldest. By the way, Neuschwanstein Castle in the snow is gorgeous and probably would be the highlight of your trip.

We enjoyed the Weisse Taube last month, also on the Altstadt (fortress) side of the river, in the Kaigasse. %26quot;Home-y%26quot; rather than slick, but more than adequate, well located just a bit away from the crowds but only a minute or two%26#39;s walk (literally) away from the main shopping street and tourist sights, and a very charming, courteous, and helpful staff (like everywhere in Austria, in our experience). They also offer, or did offer, a nice 3-night package deal including the Salzburg Card, a concert or Marionetten performance of your choice, and a short sightseeing tour of the city, at a not-insignificant saving.

Next door, the lobby of the Wolf looked very nice, but we didn%26#39;t see any of the sleeping rooms.

Friends of ours from Williamsburg stayed at the Elefant in July and were very pleased. But check the Elefant reviews on this website, which include a couple of horror stories that led us to look elsewhere.

My husband and I and our two children, who were 10 and 12 at the time, went to the Christmas Market at the Dom Platz last year and it was charming and very atmospheric. I cannot help with the hotel because we were passing through. However we loved it so much we are visiting again this year and making an overnight visit so that we can really enjoy it. We haven%26#39;t been to any other Christmas Markets so can%26#39;t make a comparison, but we all felt it added an extra bit of magic to Christmas - I%26#39;m sure you will have a lovely time!

We always stay at the Hotel Doktorwirt in Aigen. Parking no problem. Here is the link:

The Hotel Sacher is 4+ star and located just across the river from the old town. It is expensive and rated #1 by TripAdvisors. tripadvisor.com/Hotel_Review-g190441-d253252…

The hotel website is at: http://salzburg.sacher.com/index_en.asp?lan=1

For a webcam picture click on %26quot;Salzburg Vorstadt%26quot; at: www.panoramablick.com/index.php…

At the same website click on %26quot;Hanuschplatz%26quot; and that is the bridge right next to Hotel Sacher that crosses the river to the old town.

Thanks to al for the excellent responses, they were a tremedous help. We will have to make decesion soon becuase rooms are filling quickly, as we are finding out trying to book a room at our other destination: Rothenburg o.d.T! The Stuttgart Christmas Market sounds nice. We make this trip every year and try to go to a different one each time. I lived in Heidelberg for six years so I know the country fairly well. Thanks again to all!

My family and I have gone the last two years and plan to go again this year. We stay at the Bloberger Hof. Their website is www.blobergerhof.at We have traveled all over Europe and their accomodations have been one of the best we have ever stayed in and their food is fabulous. (It is also mentioned in the Rick Steve%26#39;s Germany and Austria 2005 book) It is easy to get to by car and once there, the bus line is VERY easy and we take the bus everywhere. If you plan to see the castle, the museums and such, the Salzburg Card is the great way to do it and can be bought right there at Bloberger Hof. The Christmas market is very nice and Salzburg is an awesome place to visit.

Hi, I have been to the markets and am also going again in December. Check out this site, they are at all different locations, but the atmosphere is lovely everywhere.

Also check out the Bestwestern hotels, they are all nice as well as any of the rated hotels you will see on Fodor%26#39;s or Frommer%26#39;s. Karen Brown also has a couple on her website.
