where to go?

Hi,

We are planning on going skiing / snowboarding in Feb 06 and haven%26#39;t a clue where to go! There are 8 of us going, looking for excellent night life and apres ski with good facilities for beginners. We would be looking for a nice hotel to stay in too - We were originally looking at Andorra but apparently Austria is better? We were thinking of maybe Kitzbuhel, St. Johann or Soll? Any recommendations?

Kitzbuehl is definitely a place to consider, as are practically all places in the Arlberg region.

I would add the Saalbach valley to the list.

If you would also consider Switzerland, I liked skiing in Arosa. Went there when the February thaw rained out my skiing in Austria.

I have been to Andorra (Ps de la Casa) 3 times.. also Kitzbuhel and Sol... Depends what ur looking for.. Andorra is marbella in the snow.. cheap booze and good nightlife.. but the runs aren%26#39;t as challenging as they could be. ** Also a 3-4hr transfer from the airport... Austria is more up market, and that%26#39;s where i would go these days.. but have nothing but good things to say about Andorra on the whole.. if ur young and want an unsophisticated week of fun then go for Andorra.. otherwise Austria is your best bet.. Kitz is good the last week in Jan, due to the Hanenkam world cup races in town.. but does shut down some of the ski area.. Have a good one..

kitzbuhel a little big for my liking not my cup of tea really, but may fit what your looking for, soll excellent skiing, nightlife but full of brits and irish (may be a good thing, or bad thing) saalbach/ hinterglemm mentioned in another post is excellent, you cannot really go wrong in austria, best snow conditions two years on the bounce, but places being booked up like hot cakes.

Also looking for advice for the February snowboarding trip. We have gone to St Johann for the last 2 years. I like it because its not a huge town and the runs are pretty good. The boyfriend is looking for something as little more challenging this year and is suggesting Sölden. Any advice?

Sölden is a very good, but very large and quite expensive place with skiing runs at high altitude (which guarantees you a lot of snow). Contrary, Kitzbühel has big parts of it%26#39;s skiing area at or below 1500 m height, which means they have no snow half the time. If you go to Kitzbühel, you will have a lot of night life but probably no skiing - or only up on the small glacier. Boooring.

You have to try Saalbach Hinterglemm. Brilliant for beginners and intermediate. I learned to ski there many years ago and fell in love with the sport. Nightlife and apres ski are super too. The Hotel Post is lovely as is the Reiterhof.

Thanks for the replies. Not too worried about night life - as long as there is a bit of apres ski and a few pubs and restaurants Im ok.

Forget Andora, you can not compare to Austrian resorts .-

Kitzbuhel has just added a lnk to another ski area making it one of the biggest in Europe ,still is low altitude but usually you are ok until late season unless there is a very bad start to season.Nightlife is not that fantastic ,one of the most prettiest towns in a ski resort- is a member of %26quot;best of the Alps%26quot; checkout website.

Saalbach has everything you want - great ski area , not too difficult but also some challenging runs with excellent lift system ,low altidude ,some great hotels and probably one of the best nightlife at a ski resort.

Ishgl also is similar too above but high altitude .

St Anton some not bad hotels and challenging skiing ,good nightlife ,high altitude.
