hotel neuer markt v. hotel austria

hello and happy new year, we are planning a family trip to europe commencing with a three night stay in vienna, we think we have narrowed our search between pensione neuer markt and hotel austria, because they each have an apartment that will accomodate our family of 5. Would you kindly let us know which is the better choice in terms of central location, non smoking facilities, family friendliness, etc. Thank you so much.

As a resident , I have not stayed at either place but can comment on several things.

The Neuer Markt is in a better location in my opinion. More central to the major tourist sights, shopping and many restaurants.

If both have similar rates for your accomodations, Neuer Markt wins.

Look at the comments of those who have stayed at each place for more information too.

with much appreciation for your suggestion, the prices are similar, very reasonable for our family of five. Could you recommend a nice resturant in the innere stadt for a Saturday? We are having a family gathering with many people.once again, many thanks for your input.

i read some reviews and pensione neuer markt comments are a bit mixed, could you recommend any other value hotels in this area? thank you very much.

I%26#39;ve read some mixed reviews of Neuer Markt too - particularly that it can be noisy. Maybe Hotel Austria - which has a reputation for extreme quietness - might suit you after all. I%26#39;ve never stayed there but I would quite like to try it. The location is actually very good. Vertical is right as always that Neuer Markt is more central (and juat across the street from Oberlaa - a major point in its favour!) But the location for Hotel Austria is also extremely convenient tho not strictly as central. It%26#39;s very close to Schwedenplatz which has excellent transport links (for example, direct transport to Schonbrunn and to the Prater) and the airport bus stops a block away which makes the airport-city transfer much easier. The Fleischmarkt (that end) is very nice with some good places to eat (Grieschenbeisl, Cafe Diglas) and there%26#39;s a small supermarket there too. I often stay in that area and find it very handy for getting around, as well as being very quiet.

Have you looked at the Pertschy chain of hotel/pensions? I don%26#39;t know if they do larger apartment-style rooms but Pension Pertschy is very central, just off the Graben, and the price I think compares not badly with Neuer Markt or Austria. Their slightly cheaper branch, Pension Christina near the Schwedenplatz, is also convenient - I often stay in both of these pensions.

The other option is an apartment - there are several in the central city area. Vertical could probably give you some tips if you were interested in those (I defer to the real expert!)

With much thanks and appreciation, I am awaiting a reply from the Pension Pertschy and Aviano, they both seem closer to Neuer Markt hotel, which we may still choose over Austria if these new one donot have a family room, I didn%26#39;t realize choosing a hotel in Wien would be so difficult(so many choices, so many mixed reviews) and we still have ti pick a resturant on Saturday for a family celebration, any suggestions? Once again, many thanks, and nice kitty Roley!

Pension Pertschy is a good choice to stay in my opinion also.

Places to eat in the Neuer Markt area:

Reintalers Beisl - Dorotheergasse 4 ( near Graben)

Barbaro-

directly on NeuerMarkt - a little more expensive- one of several restaurnats owned by the same successful individual

Augustinerkeller- on Augustinerplatz ( Augustinerstrasse 1-

can be filled with tourists at times but food is ok

also just outside of Augustinerkeller on the corner- a good sausage stand good for a quick snack or meal.

With many thanks, the Pertschy did have a family room for 171 euros/night compared with Neuer Markt at 160 euros/night. It is very odd but Pertschy informed me that my parents%26#39; room (the double) was 137 euros, but the venere.com had it for 129. And venere.com would not allow me to book a 5 person room at all. Considering the two places I guess the Pertschy is preferred over the Neuer Markt Pension? Again, many thanks for hotel and resturant recommendations.

I would prefer Pertschy over Neuer Markt - not to say anything against the latter but I%26#39;ve stayed in Pertschy maybe six times and every time everything has been perfect - completely efficient, and just what I wanted. I like the peace of mind that goes with staying in their hotels!

With respect to the price - the Pertschy Pesion does have a range of about 3 or 4 different sized double rooms so maybe the one offered by Venere was one of the smaller ones.

The location for Pertschy is maybe a shade better - if you%26#39;re interested in visiting the various museums etc in the Hofburg palace - though there%26#39;s very little in it, just a couple of blocks. But Pertschy is probably a little quieter - not much comes down the Habsburgergasse except the little buses and the odd fiaker!

I can%26#39;t remember if you said when you are travelling but if you are going in summer, Pertschy has the advantage of a mini bar in the rooms, which is good for storing your cold drinks. Most Viennese hotels don%26#39;t have these, and it does get hot in summer so that%26#39;s a useful addition.

We are actually going in April, and look forward to many museum excursions. Pertschy informed me that there was indeed two room sizes, so this looks like the place we will be staying and taking both doubles as more family is joining us. Rol, you thought it was a better location, but it is not deserted is it? We are going as a family group and do not want any unsafe areas. But we are city savy.

Don%26#39;t worry, you won%26#39;t need much city savvy in Vienna! It%26#39;s a very safe city - I go around there on my own at all hours of the night which I would be leery of doing in the UK. And of the two locations Pertschy is definitely more %26quot;upmarket%26quot; - between the two most exclusive shopping streets in Vienna, the Graben and the Kohlmarkt. If it%26#39;s quiet it might be because it has a seminary across the street :)

The Neuermarkt is busier because quite a lot of traffic goes round the roundabout in the centre of the square (you have to be careful crossing there as the cars tend to come out at you unawares).

But there are always quite a few people around in the centre of Vienna, especially near the Hofburg, so you needn%26#39;t worry about it getting deserted in the evenings like a business district would. There are lots of restaurants and cafes in the area too.

Enjoy your stay! I%26#39;m going for Easter myself, but I%26#39;ll be down on the Schwedenplatz (it%26#39;s much easier to get to the Volksoper from there, curiously enough!)
