Salzburg or Vienna? both?

Hello, we are planning a trip this fall. I am interested in Austria. I have a friend who gave me time saving ideas, she said go to Salzburg instead of Vienna. She had a bad experience. I was interested in feed back. Which has more to see, more to offer?? I ideally was thinking of doing both. Any other interesting must see sites in Austria?

I have to say that although Salzburg is a very beautiful city, it is also relatively small and can probably be seen in less than a day.

Vienna on the other hand is a city of great size. It offers so much more in the way of sightseeing, entertainment and shopping. You could probably spend a week in the Austrian capital and not get bored.

Thus, I strongly encourage you to choose Vienna.

I agree with prior poster- much more to see and do in Vienna. Salzburg , especially in 2006 ( the 250th anniversary of the birth of Mozart) is also good to visit but no more than 2 days is needed to see most things.

Vienna has something to fit almost the interests of everyone from Music , Museums, Parks, Palaces, Horses, Boys choir, shopping or just %26quot; people watching%26quot; at a cafe.

It is unfortunate that your friend had a bad experience in Vienna- but still it should be no reason to deter your visit.

Between both cities are many opportunities for tourists

The Lake District ( see many comments on this site) to Melk Abbey, The Wachau area of the Danube with many beautiful villages and wineries.

Positively confirmed: strongly recommended to visit both Salzburg and Vienna, allow substantially more time for Vienna (it´s about 10 times the size of Salzburg). Other must sees: e.g. some Salzkammergut lakes / villages (e.g.Hallstatt)/mountains; Melk abbey; Wachau valley of the Danube river, ...

Hi

I have just returned from Salzburg. My husband and I went for a Christmas break and had a fantastic time. Salzburg is a very beautiful city, we went on the Sound of Music Tour, and viewed Mozart%26#39;s birthplace. The pubs and restaurants were buzzing although we had to search for the traditional one%26#39;s (being that it was over the xmas period). The food was great but no cheaper than the UK. The views from the fortress were fantastic, especially with all the snow. We stayed right next to the Mirabell Gardens which are famous. A tour bus to the Austrian mountains and seeing the German boarder are also well worth a visit. A 2-4 day stay should be suffiecient, so perhaps you could do both cities.

regards

Hi I have been to Austria a few times and my favourite place was Seefeld.

You can get a train there to take you to Innsbruk (about 30 minutes ) which has some very beautiful buildings.

Also a train, the other direction, to Mittenwald, Bavaria (about 20 minutes} a picture postcard village very quaint and beautiful.

The mountain scenery around Seefeld is very accessible, with gondolas right to the top, wonderful scenery.

Highly recommend the Hotel Alpenpark for comfort and mouth watering food !
