We are arriving at 6:40 p.m. and have to leave in the morning. With only the one evening 1-23-06, what could we plan to do. Is shopping open late in the evening?

Most all the shops will close at 6PM ( 18:00)
Too late also for a concert or Opera as most will begin about 7 PM.
I would suggest a ride on the strassenbahn ( streecar ) # 1 or 2 around the %26quot; Ring %26quot; to get a quick look at many of the major sights including the Hofburg , Parliament, Fine Art and Natural History Museum,Rathaus ( City Hall) and many other old buildings.
This short trip , about 25 minutes will at least give you an introduction to the city. It is just as good or better as most all buildings are lighted at night.
Best of all it will make a big circle to bring you back to where you started.
A short walk through the city center on Graben, Kohlmarkt and Kartnerstrasse is also very nice.
