train from Vienna to Munich

We will be traveling this Fall and at some point end up in Vienna late (around 3PM) on a Sunday. We would like to take a train from Vienna to Munich around 5PM. I know it is approx a 4 hour trip. Which train line (are there several?) should be take and what is the approx cost? We had originally planned on renting a car but the drop off fee (in Frankfurt) is $240 US !

Thank you

Hi! There are several possibilites, but it%26#39;s all on one train line. Trains start at Wien Westbahnhof (Vienna West rail station). For example, there is a direct train at 16:22, the next possibility is at 18:20 with changing trains at Salzburg (very easy).

Just have a look at http://fahrplan.oebb.at/bin/query.exe/en

FROM: Vienna

TO: Munich

and your travel data. It will show all trains to München Hbf. (Hbf. is the appreviation for Main Railway Station).

Single fare (2nd class) EUR 68,80 oneway.

Single fare (1st class) EUR 106,90 oneway.

Reduction applies to %26quot;VorteilsCard%26quot; holders. This card is available for all people younger than 26, older than 60/65 (f/m), disabled, but also families with children younger than 26. For the %26quot;Vorteilscard Familie%26quot; you%26#39;ll need an account statement from your bank, showing that you get money for your children (which happens in Austria to all partens with children under 26 which do not earn their own money).

Tickets can be bought just before you go at the Westbahnhof, but be there in time. No need to reserve seats especially if you do not boad the train 2 mins prior to departure.

At the Westbahnhof go to the counters %26quot;AUSLAND%26quot; (foreign country). You can pay cash, with credit card or Maestro. Ticket machines have only national tickets.

hi

I go several times a year from Vienna to Munich to visit my friends. Next trip is in February.

there is a special price with the direct train which is 29 Euro single/ 58 Euro for a return trip per person. the price is called %26quot;SPARSCHIENE%26quot; which can be booked at the railway station or at the train travel agency but only some seats per train are available for this price.

There are 3 direct trains from Wien Westbahnhof to Munich Hauptbahnhof but the most fitting train is the one EC 62 , which departs 16.22 the next train afterwards is only at 11,30 pm the EN 268 .

The other trains are with one change in Salzburg eg leaving Vienna 18:22 with ICE 766 and Salzburg - Muenchen with EC 110

but I don´t know if the SPARSCHIENE ticket is available for the nondirect trains to.

So best is you contact OEBB directly

Here is the direct link to the SPARSCHIENE preis
