New Year in Vienna

Seems a long way off now,but we intend to be in Vienna over New Year 2007,after having just completed a six day river cruise from Nuremburg.

Do we need to book early for Concerts,Ballets or Operas.

Also has anyone experienced New Years eve celebrations where there is dancing in the streets?

Vienna is a perfect place for New Years .I would highly recommend it

The center of the city is turned into a large area of celebration with many squares becoming stages for all types of non- stop music from waltz to rock.

Hundreds of thousands of people eat, drink and dance in the New Year. They just wander about until they find a venue they like.

You can even have waltz lessons in front of the city hall.

many streets become no traffic zones only for the party goers.

I have often been part of this time - an interesting evening.

Definitely book your hotel early. The city is completely full for these days.Try to get a hotel in the city center.

The New years Concert at the Musikverein is sold out and only a lottery is now available for tickets.

Other venues for the 31st are usually sold out very early.

One however can always find a ticket but at aninflated price.

But so many concerts etc. that you can always find something- But for the better quality ones start early.

We stayed in the Arcotel having booked it quite late, but it was a good choice. Not too far out (15 minutes walk into the city centre which is quite compact - even NY Eve we didn%26#39;t need to take any taxis or public transport) and good value for money.

Vienna is perfect for New Year for all the reasons mentioned in the previous member%26#39;s response, and very romantic if you%26#39;re a couple. The added advantage is that you don%26#39;t need to book a restaurant weeks in advance (and thus take a chance on your NY eve if you don%26#39;t know the city) as it%26#39;s great just to spend the evening outside where it%26#39;s all happening.

Plus, as everything happens outdoors, if you want to dash into a bar and warm up you can easily find a table somewhere.

Thankyou for your replys,we will definitely take to the streets New Years eve.

The Travel Agent has us booked in at the Graben Hotel,is that a good choice?

One of the reviews mentioned no air conditioning, does that mean it is also not centrally heated for winter?

I understand that temperatures can be in the minus that time of year.

Graben is in the center of the city. A good location for the festivities.Near to many restaurants and tourist sights.

To my knowledge all hotels in Vienna have central heat Many are older, such as the Graben and never had central airconditioning.

The last three New Years temperatures have been about 0 grad C or 32 grad F. in the evening.
