best western zum hirschen

Have stayed there. One of the best places in Salzburg. 5 nights is OK if you have a car and plan to visit nearby places, like the Salzkammergut, (lake district)of which Hallstatt is part, also Berchtesgaden (Kehlsteinhaus, Koenigsee is worth a day%26#39;s trip, although you preobably will drive through B. on your way to Zell am See.

Grand Hotel in Zell am See on a par (in terms of quality and probably price) to Hirschen.

thanks treplow, thats great i think we will book it, bestwestern have a special at the momnet on their web site. do u think 5 nights will be too long in salzburg, we wont have a car but plan to do tours etc... would u stay longer in zel than 2 nights. we really only plan on going to zel to do some summer skiing on the glacier.

If you don%26#39;t have a car, you still can go by trains to Hallstatt and by bus to Berchtesgaden. That uses up about 2 days in Salzburg, plus sightseeing in the town (additional 2 days). So, if you have the time, add a day to Zell am See. The town is pretty, you can go up to the top of the Schmittenhoehe by cable car. To get to the Kitzsteinhorn (Kaprun) and ski there will take you another full day. I enjoyed skiing there, although on my first run from the topof the lift station, where it is a bit steep and it was icy, I slipped and took about 3 other skiers down with me on the short slope. Embarrasing!

Hi treplow.

well we booke zum hirschen for 4 nights now i%26#39;m kinda thinking maybe 3 nightw will be too long in zel, maybe we should go somewhere else like innsbruck and just do a day trip to zel and kaprun for the skiing. i am so confused, any advice would be greatly appreciative

thanks again

Loggy,

don%26#39;t get confused - try to enjoy Austria at its best.

First of all, your hotel choice is just right for what you have in mind - near the train station, 5 mins walking.

4 nights in Salzburg are just right, gives you time to explore the city (1 day) see the environs (i.e. Hallein, Berchtesgaden, Salt mine, Eagles Nest, 1 day) go to the lake district (St. Wolfgang, Sound Of Music related things, Hallstatt, 1 day) and go for a 1/2 day of glacier skiing in Kaprun (thats usually enough just for the fun of it) combined with a few hours in Zell am See.

As for attending tours there is everything available from big 50-seater tour coaches (like those?) to Minvans for groups of up to 8 people to the luxury of a stretch limousine - make your choice!

Then you can always head to Innsbruck (2 hours by train, trains run every hour). Other options include Cesky Crumlov (in czech Republich, another UNESCO city, would need a car), Vienna (3 1/2 hours by train) or Venice (5 hours by car, by train would need 2 days).

How do I know all that? I am a native local ...

Good luck and keep asking!

Hi salzburger thank you so much for the info, venice that would be fantastic, would love to go there. what would be the best option about goin there preferable we would not like to drive. i still have 3 nights which i have not accounted for. what do u think of innsbruck. do u think 3 nights is too much in zel am see???

3 nights in Zell am See? It%26#39;s a small town within a nice area, but 3 nights? This mostly depends on personal preference, if you like the countryside, mountains, etc. this one is yours ..

Venice: there is a train leaving around midnight from Salzburg, getting you into Venice early morning, spend the day, overnight and head back around noon, getting you into Salzburg early evening. Don%26#39;t get shocked, hotels, food %26amp; drink are quite expensive there ....
